U.S. Commerce Department Ends Review of Duties on Chinese Wood Products

Estimated reading time: 5-8 minutes

On November 5, 2026, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced it is stopping a review related to special taxes, called countervailing duties, on wood products from China. These wood products are mostly for building and decoration.

Background Information

In February 2021, the U.S. began charging extra taxes on Chinese wood products to help American producers. These taxes were meant to make it fair if Chinese companies got too much help from their government.

Every year, companies can ask the government to review these taxes. In February 2026, the Commerce Department opened the window for people to request such a review for the year 2025. The Coalition of American Millwork Producers, an American group, asked for a review. Some Chinese companies asked for it, too.

Initial Actions

In March 2026, the Commerce Department started the review. They chose two main companies, Bel Trade Wood Industrial Co., Ltd, and Zhangzhou Wangjiamei Industry and Trade Co., Ltd, to focus on. They also looked at 34 other companies.

Withdrawal of Requests

By June 29, 2026, the companies and groups who originally asked for a review started to change their minds. They began to take back their requests. At first, they took back requests for 14 companies. Then, Bel Trade said they really wanted out for all companies they had asked about.

Reasons for Ending the Review

The Commerce Department found that during 2025, none of the companies brought in any wood products from China that would need these extra taxes. If there are no entries, there is nothing to review. The review can only happen if products come in that are supposed to pay these duties.

Conclusion

Since there were no new wood products that needed these special taxes in 2025, the Commerce Department decided to stop the review altogether. This means nothing changes for now.

The Commerce Department will let the U.S. Customs and Border Protection know that they don’t need to make any new tax decisions on these products for 2025. All previous rules will continue as they are.

This decision follows the rules for how and when these kinds of tax reviews can be stopped. They will keep using the current deposit rules for companies involved.

The Commerce Department reminds everyone to follow all rules about keeping information safe. If anyone used special, private info, they need to follow the guidelines given by the government to return or destroy this info properly.
