International Students from 11 Countries Visit JINGSH Chengdu for Legal Language Practice

A language practice afternoon organized by Sichuan University’s College of Literature — office tour led by Fan Zhang, firm-wide exchange, and a Q&A on how trade contracts cross borders

On the afternoon of October 8, 2026, more than 20 international students from 11 countries — including South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Kazakhstan — visited JINGSH Chengdu for a legal language practice activity organized by Sichuan University’s College of Literature. Lawyers from the firm took part in the reception and discussions; Fan Zhang, Director of the Foreign Legal Affairs Department, led the office tour and joined the professional Q&A session.

The Tour: Inside a Cross-Border Practice

The visit began with a tour of the firm’s office and its specialized practice zones, guided by Fan Zhang. The route was designed to show what the daily work of a foreign-related lawyer actually looks like — client files worked in two languages, transaction structures mapped out across jurisdictions, and the documentation discipline on which cross-border matters ultimately turn. For most of the students, it was their first time inside a Chinese law firm.

The students toured the firm’s office and business function areas before the roundtable session.

A briefing film followed, introducing the firm’s history, core practice groups, and cross-border service capabilities, before the session moved to the roundtable.

The roundtable that followed brought the firm’s lawyers and the students around one table. The discussion centered on a theme at the heart of the firm’s foreign-related practice: language is the medium through which legal work crosses borders, and law is the discipline that gives language its professional depth. Lawyers from different practice groups and language backgrounds shared how that combination works in daily practice — how a matter moves from a first call in a second language to a contract, a filing, or a hearing.

The Q&A: Three Questions That Deserve Real Answers

The free-exchange session went well beyond career talk. The students raised questions on self-defense and criminal liability, the applicable law of international trade contracts, and work visas and employment pathways for foreign graduates in China. Fan Zhang answered the trade contract questions from her own docket — and the answers are worth recording, because they are the same questions real exporters ask.

The roundtable exchange — questions ranged from criminal liability fundamentals to international trade contracts and work visas.

Lawyers from the firm’s foreign-related team joined the exchange throughout, answering questions alongside Fan Zhang. Professor Xian Lixia closed the visit by thanking the firm and encouraging the students to carry what they saw into their practice reports and career planning.

Why a Firm Open House Matters

For the students, the afternoon offered something a classroom cannot: a real file room, real questions from real practitioners, and a clearer picture of the road from language study to legal practice. For the firm, sessions like this are how the next generation of foreign-related talent — on both sides of the language divide — gets introduced to the work.

The event was covered by the organizers — see the official WeChat report for the full Chinese-language coverage.
